3rd YEAR MAIN PROJECT
My main project was a medium-scale sheltered housing project for an elderly demographic. The site previously served as a granary but now is no more than a run down brown-field site. It is situated on the water and the area is very prone to flooding and therefore part of the project is to deal with the flooding concern. For our study trip we went to Rotterdam and Amsterdam to look at social housing projects and to see how a country situated below sea level deals with flooding.
I have designed a feature wall carved from oak wood. It is 2.2 x 7.5 metres and will feature in one of the entrance ways to my site. The artwork is inspired by native american artwork found throughout Vancouver. It is in reference to Captain George Vancouver who set off from King's Lynn on his discovery of the west coast of North America.
The windows work like a Russian Doll system. The corner window remains fixed and windows 1& 2 can slide along tracks 1&2 and slot behind the fixed window as seen in diagram 1. Diagram 2 shows how the corner window can be opened up. It slides along its track through a void in the adjacent wall and slots behind the fixed window.
